So this is strange...I'm not wearing anything vintage in this outfit. That doesn't happen very often!

We just got back from NYC last night, and while it's good to be home, I wish we would have had more time to spend with our friends while visiting. It was a bit of a whirlwind trip. Oh well, I should focus on the positive. We got to see our friends' brand new baby, have happy hour with a big group of people I've been missing ever since I moved, and eat some of our favorite Brooklyn foods. Not too bad for less than three days there. Also, the weather was just perfect, so we spent plenty of time walking around outside, one of my favorite NYC activities!

It's funny that I never thought to take outfit photos while waiting for the subway when I lived there because it turns out it makes for a great setting. As an added bonus, the station was pretty empty since we were in Park Slope in the early afternoon on a Monday...and the G train showed up as soon as we were finished shooting. Way to go G train! (Those who have never lived in Brooklyn won't understand what a feat it is for the G train to do anything you want it to do.)

This is such a cute, lightweight top with lovely colors in the plaid. It can really go with just about anything, but I thought it was perfect for layering with this denim dress. The scarf tie was a bit of an afterthought, but why not play around with some pattern mixing? Especially when the colors match so perfectly. And who can resist some gold shoes to top it all off? I know I'm a sucker for anything metallic or glittery!

I'm now selling purses in my Etsy shop! I can't get over the bling-y awesomeness of the first one. It's perfect 80s glam! I have to say, I really like branching out into accessories. Clothes are fun, but it's nice to have a bit of variety. Plus, now you can plot an entire outfit from my shop. Well, almost...I guess I better work on getting some shoes listed next!

Hiking Solstice Canyon

On Saturday we decided to tackle our first big LA hike: Solstice Canyon in Malibu. We started out on the Rising Sun Trail, which zigzags it's way up into the Santa Monica Mountains. If you look behind you as you go, you get to see this beautiful view of the ocean framed by the mountains.

What am I looking at, you might ask? Well, there was a really cool spider web inside this hole.





After a super sweaty hike with almost no shade, we finally came to the Roberts' Ranch House. Built in 1952, it burned in a fire in 1982, leaving ruins to be explored. Let me tell you, it's strange to see palm trees in the middle of a mountain canyon! The only stranger thing might have been seeing the giraffes, camels, buffalo, African deer, and exotic birds that they used to keep on the ranch!



We made our way back out by following the Solstice Canyon Trail. It was a much easier hike, and we're pretty sure this must have served as the extremely long driveway to the ranch. We found this bathtub looking thing that was probably used to water horses or something. Matt decided to pretend to take a bath. Can you blame him? It was hot out! So hot that we decided to hit Zuma Beach before heading home. The ice cold ocean water felt amazing!

I wish I could have photographed myself walking under some beautiful autumn foliage, but I'm afraid the palm trees don't change with the (lack of) seasons. That doesn't stop me from loving this dress! I worked for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County back when I lived in Cincy, and this is the kind of outfit I could totally see myself wearing in that setting. Classic, but a bit subversive...just like any good public library!

What do you think of my new haircut? I went to the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica yesterday intending to just get a trim, but the student suggested doing this instead. I think it's really fun! Similar to how it was before, but with a little kick. Switched it up just enough to keep me from getting bored.
