Bits and Pieces

You can't expect me to go thrifting this often for my Etsy shop and not keep some things for myself! These are some items I picked up over the past few weeks. I find it's helpful to have very specific things I'm looking for, that way I don't buy every awesome thing I see!

This shirt has such a fun print, and I love the color combo!

We're planning to use this to hold spare change.

Who doesn't need a basic braided brown leather belt?

I'm going to keep jewelry in this candy dish.

Now for a long evening waiting for the election results to come in. At least with living on the west coast, you get to hear them earlier in the night!

Burgundy Tassel Print Dress
Lots of fun prints in this week's new batch, don't you think? I especially love the last one, with its great fall colors. Whether you call it oxblood or burgundy, who isn't looking to add some of this season's hottest color to their wardrobe? Plus those tassels are so cute! As you can probably imagine, I'd pair it with mustard tights. I might just have to do that for an upcoming "How I'd Wear It"...

Altered State: Forest Green Dress

110212_b4after_complete

I was in the mood for a challenge, so I decided to choose a dress that needed a bit more work for this week's alteration. It didn't really turn out exactly like I planned, but I still think it was a success overall.

Originally I intended to hem the bottom of the skirt, but I cut it too short in the front and had to leave it raw. I might keep my eyes peeled for some cute trim to cove the ragged edge. Also, making a mullet hem was a lot more difficult than I anticipated! I kinda suck at cutting fabric...

I removed the vest, but decided to sew the ties that were attached to it back into the dress itself. This is a plus sized dress, so I needed all the help I could get making it a bit more formfitting. I also took in the sides of the bodice, but honestly, they could be pulled in another inch or so to fit better around the arm openings.

Whatcha Wearing?
Vintage dress & J Crew blazer from Goodwill
Vintage beret from Salvation Army / Tights from Gap
Bracelet & necklace from Day-Lab / Boots from Beacon's Closet

Hey, it might not look exactly how I planned it, but it's a big improvement from the original, right? Plus it's such a great fall color! I actually considered leaving the vest on, but now I'm very glad I changed my mind. Let's face it, that vest is weird...

Whatcha Wearing?
Sweater available here in my Etsy shop
Tights c/o We Love Colors
Reformed skirt from Urban Outfitters / Shoes from Crossroads Trading

To me this is the perfect outfit for a holiday party. Thick, warm turtleneck sweater to keep you warm on a freezing December night, and a flippy little skirt to keep it fun. The red tights just give the neutral outfit that necessary little pop of color. Also, don't you think this sweater has the best textures? I love how there are so many different patterns knitted into it! It helps to keep something as basic as a cream sweater interesting.

Halloween Glamour

We went to a super fun Halloween party on Saturday night, and this was my costume! Pretty easy and almost entirely assembled from thrift store finds.

First off, I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of these photos. I didn't feel like getting ready hours before we were going to leave so that we could take photos before it got dark. Instead you get these lovely photos taken with a flash. Let's just pretend we were going for a Terry Richardson-esque look with the white wall and everything and call it a day.

Can you guess who I'm dressed as? Don't worry, no one could (this year or two years ago when I wore an almost identical costume). I'm Clara Bow! She was a famous, redheaded (although you couldn't tell because everything was black & white) silent film actress from the 20s. My favorite part of this costume is the eyelashes. Obviously they aren't historically accurate, but I do like to add a bit of outrageousness to my costumes. I pretty much want to wear these all the time, although I think that might result in some really weird looks. Also this curly hair is a fun change, but I know I'm too lazy to do it on a regular basis.

Did anyone else do anything fun for Halloween over the weekend, or is everyone waiting for the actual holiday on Wednesday? We're planning to carve a pumpkin and watch E.T. tonight...a Halloween tradition!

I think it's kind of funny that there's so much cream/white/yellow in this group...I really didn't plan it that way! I think my favorite from this bunch is the green 60s dress up top. It's such a cute dress, and the fabric is super soft. Also, that embroidery. So beautiful. What do you think of this week's new items?

This week flew by, and I'm happy about that because tomorrow night I get to dress up and go to a Halloween party! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays precisely because it involves a costume. I'll take any excuse to put together a fun costume! You can follow me on Instagram @chrissiburn.
